A Day in the Park
Each Saturday and Sunday, a group of Shanghai seniors retires to a pagoda in People's Park, where they perform folk music and traditional Chinese opera. When we saw them they were performing a piece from the historical novel, A Dream of Red Chambers. Here an actual retired diva is accompanied by her band -- a tailor, two doctors and an engineer. Listening to the Romeo and Juliet-like tale of unrequited courtly love and death, a handful of teenage couples nestled in the sun-warmed rocks below.
