A River Runs Through It

The Yangtze River, the longest river in China, runs deep into Chinese history and culture. In Nanjing it's also very narrow and easy to cross, which has made the city's waterfront attractive to revolutionaries and foreign invaders as well as poets and artists.

The Nanjing Massacre

A number of China's proudest modern moments took place in Nanjing. It was here, in 1911, that revolutionary leaders gathered to declare the Republic of China. And it was here, in 1949, that Mao Zedong's army crossed the Yangtze River and united the country under communist rule. But in 1937, Nanjing was also the scene of one of China's darkest moments...
